The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Cantanhede, to the east by Montemor-o-Velho and Soure, to the south by Pombal and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It was once known as the “Queen of Portugal's Beaches”. Recently, Cape Mondego, on the promontory known as Serra da Boa Viagem, on the outskirts of Figueira da Foz, was declared a National Natural Monument.Figueira da Foz is therefore located on the Atlantic coast, next to the mouth of the River Mondego and extending as far as Cape Mondego, a candidate for World Heritage status for being an exemplary Jurassic site of rare visibility. It is one of Portugal's most important tourist centers, with the oldest casino in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula and the only one in the Centro region, Casino Figueira, a bullring, a huge stretch of sand with leisure and sports facilities and a lively nightlife. Most vacationers come from Coimbra, the Beiras and Spain (Extremadura, León and Castile and the Community of Madrid), some of whom have Figueira da Foz as their second home.Over the last 20 years there has been an increase in classic family housing, with the 2011 census recording 43,999 in 25,204 classic family housing buildings. Around 28.1% of the buildings are in need of repair. The working population is spread across the region's various economic activities, especially fishing, the glass industry, tourism-related activities, shipbuilding, cellulose production, the salt industry, the chemical industry and agriculture (rice production being the main focus). The municipality is crossed in the middle by the River Mondego and its hydrographic network includes several streams and five lagoons (Salgueira, Vela, Braças, Corvos and Leirosa). The regularization of the river banks has led to serious changes in agricultural practice.
